Additional Details

An image by the acclaimed white photographer Bruce Davidson, who was assigned by the New York Times to accompany the Freedom Riders in Alabama from 1961 to 1965. He received the first National Endowment for the Arts photography grant for this project, which was the subject of an exhibit sponsored by the Office of Economic Opportunity. This print, which does not credit Davidson, was distributed to the San Francisco Examiner by the OEO, and was published by them in a short piece on the exhibit on 25 November 1966.
